Geothermal Can Be a Successful Energy Alternative

Recently, the Geothermal Energy Association released a paper that recognized geothermal energy as a successful energy alternative. The paper, titled “The Economic Costs and Benefits of Geothermal Power,” states that geothermal power compares well with other available technologies and benefits public economic costs.
Geothermal power generates millions of dollars every year, and when it comes to using geothermal power on state land, there is even more of a cost benefit. Geothermal power also creates jobs. (For every 100MW of power, there are 170 permanent, full-time jobs.) It also creates over 600 annual construction and manufacturing jobs.
This type of power is also beneficial to the environment. It produces significantly less carbon emissions and pollution compared to other resources like coal or natural gas. According to the paper, geothermal power “is one of the most affordable and enduring technologies… plants have no fuel costs, and minimal maintenance or ancillary costs.” Plus, once a geothermal plant is built, it can operate steadily (regardless of environmental conditions) and produce energy for at least 30 years.
The Geothermal Energy Association is a trade association made up of U.S. companies who support the expansion of geothermal energy and are working to develop more geothermal resources. To become a member of the GEA, fill out this application form.
