Pennsylvania Is on the Rise for Renewable Energy

The Growth of Solar and Wind Power

go green

As a Glenmoore plumbing and HVAC company in the Greater Philadelphia area, we love hearing good things about Pennsylvania when it comes to energy. Recently, we read an article that pegs the Keystone state as being on a successful track to relying greatly on renewable energy.

According to research by The Pew Charitable Trusts, Pennsylvania’s energy policies have grown our solar and wind power along with industrial energy technologies. Via the 2004 Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards law, our state should be getting 18% of its electricity via renewable sources by 2021. These sources include wind, hydropower, solar, fuel cells, geothermal, and certain biomass projects.

Currently, we’re at 4% but we’ve been making important progress. Between 2009 and 20013, Pennsylvania has added nearly 1.4 gigawatts of clean energy (that’s enough energy to power more than 2.3 million 60-watt light bulbs). We’ve also gained $3.5 billion in private investments.

One of the state’s most memorable steps was when it opened the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh. The arena is the first arena in both the NHL and the AFL to be gold-certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. It boasts an energy-efficient HVAC system and energy-efficient lighting that can save up to $260,000 every year.

With its planned projects for the future, the state could see up to 5 more gigawatts of clean energy and $17.7 billion more in private investments. All of these statistics have made Pennsylvania a “rising leader” in renewable energy. In addition, our property tax incentives, customer net metering, and state grants and loans have contributed to our green progress.

So do your part and keep reducing your carbon footprint to make our state one of the most renewable around!
