Could We See a PennEast Pipeline?

We Could See a Pipeline Between PA and NJ

PennEast pipeline

If the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approves, we may be seeing a PennEast natural gas pipeline built between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. According to the PennEast Pipeline Company, LLC’s website, this $1 billion project would stretch about 108 miles and create around 2,000 jobs during the construction process.

If built, the PennEast pipeline would run between Dallas in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and Pennington in Mercer County, New Jersey. It would produce one billion cubic feet of gas every day (which is enough to heat 4.7 million homes), which would be drawn from the Marcellus Shale and would help provide homeowners and businesses with heat and electricity.

The pipeline would cut underneath the Delaware River in Pennsylvania and through wetlands and preserved farmland in New Jersey, which has raised some opposition from people in those areas. This is why the pipeline will be subject to approvals from at least 20 federal and state agencies.

Several steps need to taken before a final decision is made. This year, property owners in the proposed pipeline area were contacted and a pre-filing application was filled out for FERC. Next year, we’ll see a formal application to FERC and in 2016, the organization (along with the other agencies) should make their final decision. If the idea is approved, construction for the pipeline will begin in 2017.

The PennEast Pipeline Company is composed of a group of energy companies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They include:

  • AGL Resources
  • NJR Pipeline Company
  • South Jersey Industries
  • PSEG Power LLC
  • Spectra Energy Partners
  • UGI Energy Services
