8 Home Safety Tips

Protect Yourself and Your Family

home safety tips

Safety is an important issue in any home – especially if you have children. At our West Chester HVAC company, we care for all of our local customers and urge them to keep themselves and their families safe. Here are some home safety tips to follow:

Toxic Products

Keep gasoline, bleach, pesticides, drain cleaners, and other toxic household products out of your child’s reach. Store them on high shelves or in cabinets with child-proof locks on them. Make sure to mark any dangerous products with an appropriate label to let your child know it shouldn’t be touched.

Smoke Alarms

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without working smoke alarms. Check your smoke detectors at least once every six months to make sure they’re working properly and replace any dead batteries.

Power Outages

You never know when a power outage will strike, so stock up on candles and flash lights and keep them in easily accessible places around the house.

If your family is going on vacation for an extended period of time, have a neighbor turn on your lights for a few hours every night. This will make it look like you’re home and won’t make you a target for burglars. You can also install timing switches on your lights so that they’ll automatically turn on at a certain time every night.

Fire Escape Plan

Every household should have a fire escape plan in case of a fire. Create a safe escape route for your family and practice it on a regular basis. This will help keep everyone calm in case there’s a fire in the future.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

While many people put carbon monoxide detectors near appliances that emit carbon monoxide (gas refrigerators, water heaters, clothing dryers, etc.), they should really be putting them near their bedrooms. If a dangerous level of carbon monoxide is in the house, you’ll want to hear the alarm so you can exit your home.

Home Security System

A home security system is never a bad idea when it comes to keeping your family safe. A security system gives you added protection, 24-hour monitoring, fast response, and peace of mind.

Invest in a fire-proof safe or lock box to store your valuables (such as jewelry, money, credit cards, important documents, etc.) and keep the key or combination in a safe place.
