Why It’s Important to Stay Hydrated This Summer

dehydrationStay Happy, Stay Healthy

Summer is in full swing and just like you, the members of Timothy Off have been trying to make the most of the sweltering heat. Our HVAC company wants to remind you that it’s important to stay hydrated during the hot summer months, and here’s why:

Water is essential to our health. Our bodies are made up of 60% water and we need to keep it that way. When you’re out in the sun and sweating, it’s easy to forget that you’re losing essential fluids from your body – especially if you’re at the beach or a baseball game and aren’t thinking about it. Staying hydrated not only keeps your body at the right temperature, but also regulates your heart rate and blood pressure.

What to Drink

While you’re in the heat, make sure you drink plenty of water. If you’re not a big fan of the taste of plain water, spruce it up by adding lemon, lime, raspberries, cucumber, or other creative flavors. You can also indulge in drinks like green tea, milk, soda, juice (if you water it down a little), and sports drinks.

What Not to Drink

Avoid drinking alcohol when you’re dehydrated – it will just dehydrate you even more. Also avoid excess amounts of caffeine, which can do the same.

What to Eat

In addition to fluids, some foods can help you maintain a hydrated body. Go for fruits like watermelon (which is made up of 90% water), oranges, grapefruits and melons like cantaloupe and honeydew. You can also indulge in vegetables like celery, tomatoes, Romaine lettuce, green peppers and cucumbers. Oatmeal, soup, and yogurt can also be great ways to hydrate.

Signs of Dehydration

If you have one or more of the following signs, make sure to hydrate:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness
  • Thirst
  • Headache
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Lack of urination
  • Irritability
